Revise one bullet point on your resume

I know, you are busy and thinking about a million other things, why would you think about revising a bullet on your resume? Why would you take a moment to do this? Well, first, it doesn’t have to be right this moment. Schedule some time on your calendar this week and stick to it.
Why it’s important to review your resume regularly
Many people don’t know where their resume is saved. This is an exercise which will encourage you to find it and look at it. Make it easy to find before you really need it. This exercise could get you excited about revising other content. It’s a lot easier if you tackle it one or two lines at a time.
Reviewing your resume reminds you of your accomplishments, your skills and what you may need to add since your last update. If you are having a rough day, your resume can be a real pick-me-up!
For those who are retired, use it as a way to remember something you worked on and tell someone about it. That too will create a positive feeling and the person you tell might learn something. At the very least they could learn something new about you.
This exercise is valuable because it’s important to keep your resume up-to-date and in a convenient location. You never know when you will need it, or when an opportunity to share it will present itself. We have all had a late night updating our resume to share the next morning. Doing the work now will prevent typos and will ensure you aren’t forgetting important information.
Quick Tips
- Identify your least favorite bullet point and revise it. Maybe the statement needs better action verbs. Maybe it needs to highlight results. Whatever it is, change it up so you feel great about it.
- Save a “Master Resume” so that you have one document with everything you have ever done. You might need to combine multiple resumes. When you need it, rename it for the position/opportunity/application and cut what you don’t need. It will save a great deal of time and really help you to tailor your resume to the opportunity.
