Be kind to yourself when you try something new.

Feb 14, 2022

We all make mistakes. It’s how we learn and grow. Which is why it’s important to remember to Be kind to yourself when you try something new, or even if it’s something you have done a million times. I’ll be the first to admit I am a work in progress on this topic, especially in my professional life. I know it’s incredibly important work. However it has also become incredibly important that I show myself some love and compassion as I grow and try new things.

This was not the original post for today, I had another one prepared. However, after my “First Sip” on Monday, I realized this topic was more relevant, for me. Hopefully it could also be a good reminder to others.

Mistakes happen. Go easy on yourself.

My Monday post had a typo! Not just any typo but one of the common grammar mistakes which drives people crazy. Luckily, I had a friend who pointed it out early on, so hopefully you all didn’t see it.

On Monday, I sat around and worried about who saw the typo. I fretted because it was my first post. I worried that my audience would give up on me because of my mistake. I stressed that my friends teaching at colleges and universities wouldn’t share with their students because it appeared as if I didn’t proofread.

I realized that I quickly made it all about me! There was a lot of “I” in my worry (see above paragraph). I am not exempt from mistakes, why did I think I was? I did proofread, about 45 times. My husband read it before I posted it. Why couldn’t I give myself credit for that? We are not perfect and I am no exception. It was important to remind myself that this professional journey will be a long one. It will not be about the mistakes we make, but what we learn from them, and if we can forgive ourselves when they happen.

Here is what I learned

1. I have friends who care about me personally and professionally and are willing to point out a typo. That makes me a very lucky person.

2. My husband and I will not proofread the post at 9:30 pm after we have had a full day with the baby and multiple nights without sleep. We are both more fresh in the morning, so we will make time then.

3. Be accountable for the mistake, learn something, forgive, move on.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, remember to show yourself a little love as well and please excuse any typos!
